Arylic question

Hi Nel,
In the middle of a painting and having trouble making a soft pink.  Any suggestions?  The ones I have come up with are all plastic looking.  Also tried Chapel Rose and Compose rose, still too fake for flowers.   Thank you.  I will post picture after next attempt.
Been working on my water oil  portrait and found that the extender just made every think tackie, so I just use the paints straight.  Results are much better.

Regards, Marie

Acrylic Tip: Smooth Transitions

Acrylic on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12"

This one is for Kevin, and of course, anyone else who wants to get involved with acrylics (which I find actually more difficult than oils, though they do have some neat advantages.)

When you want to make a nice smooth transitional plane with several different shades of one color, or even several different colors, the easiest thing to do is to paint pure water over the entire target area, and scrub it in good. THEN go ahead and do your color mixing and application. The water already on the canvas will slow down your drying time, and give you more time to blend your gradations or color changes. There won't be the tackiness that sometimes develops with acrylics (making it very hard to blend anything at all.) You'll have to mix your colors thick enough not to get a streaky result, but mostly that just means don't add any water or medium to your paint for this area.

The sky here was done in this fashion, and even though I added the pink streaks, it was smooth underneath that.

Hope that helps someone.

Welcome Back!

Rainbow Woods, Oil on Stretched Canvas,16" x 20"

Welcome back, those of you who have rejoined us. I'm looking forward to seeing some work being done, and interacting with my art buddies. Get out those paints, and think about painting outdoors on one of these lovely about-to-be Spring days. I'll be waiting to see what you've been doing. Meanwhile, I'm thinking about some acrylic hints for Kevin.

Mid March Through Mid May

Bathed with Light
Acrylics on Stretched Canvas, 11" x 14"

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions.
I was unable to use Blogger for a couple of weeks, until I stumbled, quite by accident, on a fix (by returning to the old Blogger format, since my laptop wasn't happy with the new one.) So now I'm finally able to reply.

There were mixed responses. Kevin is interested in learning about acrylics, and since I'm using them for one of my classes, I'm thinking about some "tips" posts here. Evhe hasn't stopped painting for a minute, good going, Evhe! Janet is busy with family so isn't able to paint right now, and others of you have written to me privately with suggestions for mini lessons. Thanks, everyone.

So for those of you who want to have critiques, we'll open this up again from Mid March til Mid May. Three months at $30.00. If you want to use Paypal, just use the "send money" option and my email address. And start posting your paintings again anytime. Happy Painting!

some tulips

hello, dear friends!
I have some doubts about the composition of this canvas. I wanted to try something else than flowers in a avse.... but?
What do you think about the compo?
thanks! and hope you always enjoy painting....

WIP, oil, 60 x 80 cm, 24 x 32 inch

On the canvas above, it is a little magenta band on the right above as I do sometimes ;)
A first version was, with a second light green bottle behind the deep green bottle, but it was a little to artificial for me, or?  :

Re: Emailing: RSCN3985 Koi Fish Pond.

Hi Kev, I was able to 'link' over to the painting and tried to leave a message.  Doubt if it worked though.  Quite a nice painting--I love the idea of looking straight down on the fish & greenery.  You captured the movement of the Koi beautifully as I could almost picture him (her?) swimming.  Great job as usual!!!  I've always wanted to paint waterlillies (Monet) and that's what this one reminded me of.  Please keep up the good work and sharing photos.  .

Hi All!    I took a break from painting my small abstracts using painting knives to do  this 8x10 inches " Koi Fish Pond"  landscape. I thought you might like to see it. I hope everyone is well.

What's Up?

As November draws to an end, so does our session here. Trust that you all had a fine Thanksgiving and enjoyed some time with family. We will leave this blog up, and you can certainly post here anytime you like. I won't promise to critique, but if I happen to see your work up, I'll certainly take a quick look. Since we are moving into a really busy time of the year with Christmas, we won't consider a new session (three months) until after the holidays. Hope you all keep painting though, as discouraging as sales might be.

It's more a response to the beauty in the world, or the urge to put a brush to canvas that keeps us going. Yum color mixes, and the thrill of seeing something neat emerge on a blank canvas, that's the spirit that moves us. Keep it up, guys, and thanks for being a part of our small endeavor here. I hope it has helped your work a little.

Emailing: RSCN3578 "Penny's Sailboat"

Hi Nel and all!

I thought you might like to see this small 6x8 inches abstract I did with painting knives, entitled "Penny's Sailboat".  It sold on e-bay, and I shipped it out today to a man (again!) in Monte Sereno, California. One of the interesting things about doing this is seeing where in the country the buyer lives. I never even heard of most of these places! I have toyed with the idea of getting a big blank map, and coloring in all the States and Provinces my paintings have wound up in. It would be fun to see that!

Nel:   I  am definitely not making any money by selling my paintings on e-bay, as the costs are equal to or greater than the sales prices in most cases, without even considering the time spent doing  the paintings. But it is an interesting hobby, and I will probably continue to do it for awhile longer. I had a membership on the "Daily Paint Works" site for a short while but did not sell anything. I have looked at other online selling sites like Etsy and Artfire, but don't see that any of them are any better than e-bay. Do you know of any other online selling sites that you think might be worthwhile checking out? If one is not a professional artist, and  you don't have a "following" as an amateur artist, it seems pretty hopeless, unless one is satisfied doing it  just for the reward of "selling" a painting to a stranger somewhere who may like your work.

Ev-he: I think you asked me before if you could see my work on e-bay. You can register (free) with e-bay as a buyer (and possibly later on as a seller)  and log on and do a "Search" under the " art, paintings, oils, small works" category. But that is difficult because there are many thousands of paintings listed. An easier way would be to send me your e-mail address and I will e-mail you a link to one of the paintings I have listed on e-bay. Once you see that, you can then click on "Save the Seller" and "See Other Items" tabs to see my other paintings. Hope that helps.  My e-mail address is:  kcross@nycap.rr.com

Best wishes, everyone!   Kevin.

Emailing: RSCN2975 "Aurora Borealis" (6x8 inches on canvas panel)

Hi Nel and All!

This is "Aurora Borealis"   (6x8 inches) abstract, on canvas panel. Kevin.

"Mountain Sunset" (6x8 inches on canvas panel)

Hi Nel and All!

This is the correct image for "Mountain Sunset", the second painting sent to the guy in Manitoba today along with "Aurora Borealis". Sorry about the mix-up!  Kevin.

Emailing: RSCN3577 "Mountain Sunset"

Hi Nel and All!

This is the second abstract (6x8 inches on canvas panel) I sent to the same guy today in Manitoba. It is called "Mountain Sunset".  I am having a little success at selling my small abstracts on e-bay, but very little action as far as my regular oils are concerned. I don't know what that means---perhaps the abstracts are a little unusual, and that's why they sell and the others don't? It makes it a little difficult to select subjects and techniques to use, so I will probably continue to alternate them, for different purposes.  If anyone has any observations on this conundrum I'd be happy to hear about it!  Kevin.

Emailing: RSCN3577

Hi Nel, and All!

I thought you might like to see this small (6x8 inches) abstract oil on a canvas panel I did recently. It's called "Evening Sky".  I'm starting to get a little interest on e-bay auctions lately. I just sold this one on e-bay to a guy in Prescott, Arizona. I currently  have bids on 2 others, where the auctions have not expired yet.

If you would like me to continue to post my abstracts like this one  which I have on e-bay, please let me know. I don't want to bore you all with something you may not be interested in!

I hope everyone will have a very  peaceful and happy Thanksgiving!    Kevin.

Hydrangeas

In the above photo, it shows the new and improved leaves. Sorry Nel, I couldn't stand to leave them! Just had to get those veins going in the right direction. Did a little more on the blossoms too. This is a 6x6 on linen on birch board. I had painted a yellow flower on it for a DPW challenge, but never liked it so I painted over it. There is an orange-ish glow. I had started making the blossoms to look more on the brown side and changed my mind. Went with violet. Not too crazy about the orange glow part. Also, it is late in the day and overcast, so that may make emphasize the look.

The camera does some strange things with the color sometimes. Maybe you can figure it out. On the painting there is not that ring of blue around the left side of the big blossom, so much.

Emailing: RSCN3800 "Double Cheeseburger" ( 6x8 inches)

Hi Nel and All!  I have been noticing that people seem to like paintings of various food items---like fruits and veggies, cupcakes, sundaes, and snack foods. I don't know why---maybe it is comforting to them--or they can look at, but not eat it!  Anyway, I decided to try a small 6x8 painting on a canvas panel of a real nutritional "no-no": a double cheeseburger! Here is the result. It turned out better than I thought it would. I think it is pretty much done, but all comments and suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for looking at my painting.  Kevin.

Kevin Menck Workshop

Morning group demonstration
Kevin Menck, Instructor

This is the main brush he uses to paint
everything

Finished painting

Kevin's demo painting from first day

My First attempt at plein air. Not finished.
This is a view that I chose to paint on the
second day.

My painting, second day. Not Finished.

I sure have trouble getting these photos in any kind of order. Does anyone know how to do that. They are all over the place. Well, anyway. Here are some photos from the workshop that I was able to attend. Kevin is a great painter and an interesting person. He started painting 7 years ago. Now it is his career. He showed us some of his first paintings. Yes, they were crude. He just determined to do it and just threw himself into the art world. He was fortunate to befriend another established painter who let him shadow him and paint with him. I mentioned the use of one brush. It is a number 1 round bristle brush. He did everything with it. For big areas he used the side of the brush. He has a limited palette of ultramarine, cadmium scarlet, cadmium lemon and white. Since he paints plein air he has worked to get his materials down to a bare minimum since he will sometimes do some hiking to get to a painting place. He said that he experimented with mixing colors until he came up with the three main ones that he found could give him just about all the colors he already had in his collection of paints. I have used cad scarlet and love it. It is great on the tomatoes. But I have never used cad lemon before. It is great! It is so nice for highlights. It is a cool yellow but when used with the cad scarlet it can be warmed. He did cheat a little with some cobalt to get a warmer blue for the sky.
Take a look at his blog. He has some new paintings posted with some autumn scenes. They just glow!!

Autumn and Winter WIP

I tweaked the Autumn painting above, with some more shadows on the tree's left side and highlights on the grass. Below is the winter tree. It is almost finished. I'm thinking of adding a cardinal or two.

Emailing: DSCN3429 "Dreamscape"

Hi Nel and All!

I have not posted anything for comments  lately because I have been focusing mainly on my small abstracts. I have been able to sell several of these on e-bay, but my "regular" paintings are not selling. I guess the small abstracts sell better for me because they are "different" from the huge number of oil paintings available on e-bay at any one time, via auctions.

This painting is an example of what I have been doing. It is called "Dreamscape" and is only (5x7) inches, painted on a canvas panel. I only used three colors plus black and white to do it, and used four pre-set values. It was painted using painting knives only, so it has a very rich textured surface to it. I think the limited palette and limited values plus the use of painting knives makes this type of painting somewhat different from the norm.

I sold this one on e-bay and shipped it out this morning to the buyer---a lady from Knoxville Tennessee.

I will probably try another "regular" subject next, and will post it for comments.
Hope everyone is well!    "Cheers"    Kevin.
